Four Generations

Judith Hill Photography-Family Portrait: Four Generations

Capturing FOUR generations of women is something very special. It is something that was never available to me.  I am named after my great grandmother on my mom's side. I knew and loved my mom's mother, Grandmama Cranford, who lived to be 90. I never knew my other 3 grandparents as they all died when I was a baby. That being said, I certainly was not alive at the same time as my great grandparents. Because I didn't know my other grandparents or great grandparents, I've always loved hearing stories about them and looking at old photos to try and get to know them.

That's the thing about photos, you can see them, hold them and get to know the person looking back at you; even long after they are gone.

So to have 4 generations together - taking both group and individual photos - is something that a family will forever cherish, allowing that family's legacy to live on. It also sends a powerful message to those we love the most because when we allow ourselves to be captured honoring our beauty, our femininity, and our confidence, we give others permission to do the same. Empowered women, empower other women.

I always say that photography is evidence we exist in this world. Photographs will outlive us. Yet, how often do you see mom in front of the camera; let alone grandmother or great-grandmother? My guess is not often. There are likely years where the women you love have gone unrecorded. These beloved women will volunteer to take the photo or will say, "not me, get one of the kids." I know a mom's highest value is her family, yet she's not photographed with them very often. That's why I often ask clients if they want to share this with their mom-to give her the opportunity to record her beautiful legacy and to keep a part of that legacy alive forever.

When Kelsey and I spoke we started talking through the process and after the conversation was over, we had 4 generations coming in with ages spanning 2  to 75 years old. Not only are these women gorgeous, but they are also so much fun! I had a blast with them. And because I'm a connector and get to know my clients, I can also say that the beauty is inside and out. They all have very kind, giving hearts. I loved our time together.

Here's what I have come to realize about generation shoots: it is as much about having the time and space to spend together, to celebrate who you are and your love for one another, as it is about capturing beautiful photographs.  All the while, we are creating wonderful memories together. Everyone is getting hair and makeup done, playing dress-up, and cheering each other on while listening to their favorite tunes. It's the ultimate girls' day out.

And when the group comes back for their photo reveal, they are first surprised at how much we captured together, then they look at the photos and start reminiscing about the day. The photographs become a representation of the memories from that day.

The purpose of my shoots is to capture your beauty from the inside out, to show it back to you, and to capture your legacy for the rest of time. There is no greater gift that I can give a person or family than that.

Here are a few images from our time together.
